After Sept 11, the rest of us are given many opportunities to learn for the benefit of our survival. This seems to me to be a pattern in evolution. One facet is our increased intelligence brought about by having been forced to worry and thus to think, using channels in brain not activated previously. One also wonders when considering the way of the world, that maybe some people in power have allowed certain disasters precisely so as to benefit the situation at large, as they see it and in their own large interest. Particularly ironic is the truth that in such wars as now, we willy nilly learn from the other side (and they learn from us) --- bin Laden is smart enough to capitalize on the obvious fact that Western society is not only not flawless, but also by its very nature ( and that difference between authoritarian culture and Jeffersonian democracy) self critical. So paradoxically we seek what there may be constructive in another perspective, with a view to constantly improving ourselves. In that sense we always win.

But Clausewitz said the function of diplomacy is to prevent proto war from becoming total war. Clinton should have asked every American to read Clausewitz. And, without attacking bin Laden seriously at that time (mid nineties etc) Clinton should have radically improved USA defensive stance by doing then what Ururper is doing now (if the heavy-ass American Pueriles and special interests had let him --- and if not, he should have put on record the opinion that it was necessary, and threaten to later say “I told you so”).
