sighnaps

SIGHNAPS deals with the vexed question, what is sleep, and how to use it. The question is compound. for a few years i have been writing down a record of when i actually sleep. I oppose the horrid practice of “nine to five”. there are clinics that try to get folks to sleep on what society considers normal schedule. But it is not normal in the sense of healthy,in my opinion. some scientists say people naturally tend to sleep for four hours at a time. Similarly, i find, myself, that three hours is natural period of sleep for me myself. But, this does not mean i always or even usually wake up after three hours---but it often happens that i do find i have spontaneously awakened after about three hours. scientists pointing to four hours as natural, have also mentioned that people use harsh methods to keep awake for extended periods (the corollary of sleep for four hours being stay awake for four hours). there is an obvious absurdity therefore in accusing folks who find conforming to the “nine to five” pattern, of being abnormal in the sense of unhealthy. But of course psychologists generally make the false definition of health as based on normalcy (psychologists themselves being unhealthy conformists usually, and bent on “ improving”the labor/job force). i wish immediately to introduce another factor of my philosophy regarding sleep: to sleep is far from being a waste of time in the sense of”nothing being done”---indeed, sleep is highly productive, not only as recuperation and clearing the decks, but also in the straightforward sense of ordinary mental work. it is quite silly for people to be surprised at waking up with solutions to problems---what did they believe the brain was doing while they slept??? Of course, before freud, among people unaware of “the unconscious”, such events might have some quality of shock, and, indeed, we here also should acknowledge our debt to freud, seeing how benighted we used to be---but we now are quite aware of the unconscious, and so have no such excuse. The very idea that the relative unconsciousness of sleeping means the absence of thought , is stupid. 31may2001 hello. It is now Oslo Summer, 06:45 A M. This Scandinavian (such a gorgeous word!!!) summer and seasons generally really contribute to my trans-static (loose, unfettered) sleeping patterns. After some years here one begins to swing with the definiteness of the seasons, with dark winters and bright summers. 270601 0222 I am a virtuoso sleeper. I slept most of the weekend, so I can be up as needed in week.

I was supposed to get 2 pizzas for some guys i knew, but the fone rang and i got up and i wonder if they will complain if i meet them again in The Land of Nod (where they were). And one of them emphatically repeatedly told me to relax; and when i got here my friend (in The Land of Real People) said spontaneously she was relaxing. Many coincidences recently---anyway it is Summer Solstice season (St Hans Night was night to the 24th). I like that Scandinavian expression: “ night to...” 120701 18:39 There is what I call dream-think.

250701 16:43 These past two weekends I slept a lot (about twelve hours saturday, and sunday, and monday (each) and find myself all rested for shorter sleep times during week.

I certainly use dream ideas to keep myself from waking up. One can practice and learn creativity thus as well as by similar means such as sexual fantasies.

260701 00:07 I will be up all night probably, and nap in daytime, to be able to visit with my daughter and her husband and baby this coming evening.

150801 16:55 I am having a bit of difficulty these few days, due to having been given a 1950 complete (?) Encyclopedia Britannica, and having to transport the two dozen volumes to my place, while also using the computer in the absence of my colleague with whom I share it; also about to visit my daughter and her husband and my grandchild, as well as sleeping here at my colleagues place. So I have to force some of my sleep time so as to capitalixe on the availablity of the computer. note that this system is very pleasant, and beats having a computer on my own desk alone available at all times, as it is romantic in the anti-courtship-dance sense (relatioships are not defined physically). But i am getting my sleep, one way or another. I think of it as “age of sail”--- one gores with the flow, sails with the weather. I like those errors.

23;03 My colleague foned about 18:00 saying she returns tonite, so I stayed here and will soon leave for my own abode. I also have to keep in mind that I have a doctor appointment tomorrow at 18:00 gee, a 24 hour bit.

030901 0051 Two days ago (Friday) I slept 14 hours, and yesterday 12, and today (Sunday) I grabbed a few hours of naps --- this is a general plan, of sleeping as much as happens on the weekend (including Friday and Monday)(four day weekiend)(I was about to correct that typo, but let it stand as neologism for 4dayweekend).

070901 2328 I did very well today, extending my sleeping time, so as to be able to be awake when I had to, to get some tasks accomplished. I figure 16 hours from the time I wake up, so when I woke up after sleeping yesterday from about 09:00 to about 16:45, I continued to seek sleep until I had added about 3 more hours until about 02:00 this morning --- so having awake time until 18:00 today in a normal range; but I am still awake and plugging along. The next thing I have up is attending a baseball game tomorrow (Saturday) for which i have to leave home about 15:00.

120901 2102 I got to the ball-game on time and also the day after to the final; my family team winnig both games and the championship, with my son-in-law pitching brilliantly in the light rain and strong breeze in the last game (brilliantly as also on the previous Wednesday to win).

Yesterday I woke up at 15:00 and turned on the TVnews. Bad.130901 2113 When I want to remember something I just thought of, I expect a delay of about 20 seconds while it cycles --- his is part of servers in the mind, I suggest) with which we coordinate our memory --- so the memory tricks seem to me to be the use of these server functions.

onsdag 17. oktober 2001 18:59 I AM CONSIDERING INCLUDING ON THIS PAGE my sleep times, daily recorded, as scientific data immediately available as I go along. But what about past records?!! --- I have records on paper for some few years!!!!!!!!!!!
